No End in Sight

If you have not seen it already, I highly recommend Charles Ferguson's No End in Sight, a documentary on the current Iraq war, now available on DVD.

From time to time I could have a laugh at those snarky YouTube postings showing all of Dubya's most idiotic verbal mishaps--there's a sick fascination in watching such an extensive collection of stupid when one considers he was elected (arguable, I know) not once, but twice. But as you watch No End in Sight, that Good Ol' Boy put-on curdles and starts to fume a stink of corruption, short-sightedness, and pure self-interested evil in the form of deliberate ignorance. The whole lot of them have a lot to answer for...sadly that day may never come.

Please watch it if you have not done so already.

'Ware

Dear Fellow Former Kansan on the R Train This Evening:

It’s true, I’m a Jerkface. When I entered the train, I did notice you. You were smiling and said something directly to me, but I gave you little thought (“Crazy. Don’t sit next to it.”) until I sat down and realized you’d said, “Jayhawk.” I’m wearing my KU sweatshirt today, which tends to get weird looks for reasons I cannot guess. (Are they thinking, “Why are you not wearing your I heart NY t-shirt, Farmer Edna?” Probably.) I give you mad respect for trying again. On an average day at 10 past 5 p.m. my face usually looks like a baseball mitt full of bees. I’m not what they call “approachable.” Baby, you tried.

You chatted me up until the next stop, asking me if I was from Lawrence, telling me you grew up there, asking me where I was from and could I believe the football team was doing something amazing (you said what it was, but I can’t remember, only to say that I’ve heard that something unlikely is happening with our football team, which is about all my brain will ever care to absorb). You asked me how long I’d been here, told me you’d been here nine years, and you told me about a bar uptown that has a room in the back where you can watch all the KU games. I said something unnecessarily cynical and you bid adieu with a “Take care.”

Of course at one point I figured you were making a move, because that’s the only other reason I could imagine you’d be talking to me. I mean, c’mon. You’re a boy, I’m a girl…why else were you being so friendly? (And, let’s be honest, it’s me we’re talking about. Try to resist but you cannot.) As you walked away, I realized that you were Being Nice. It was a particular glint in your eye, the one that told me you knew I was sizing you up and considering my answers carefully. In this city, what stranger would you trust? Now, back home we’re not a gaggle of grinning goobers snuggling up to each other and smooching on the lips all the live long day, but it is a different place. People are more commonly friendly without ulterior motives. It’s pretty jarring when I visit home twice a year. The suspicion is hard to suppress.

How nice it was to run across a fellow goober today. Thanks for trying. And I know you were making a move, even just a little.

Pat Yo Weave, Girl

This song can get your ass off the floor and keep you from sticking your head in that proverbial bucket, especially in loony toon times of year such as these. This is the extended version, so be prepared to listen for awhile with the sound ON (sound OFF not recommended unless you "just like to watch," you perv). The dancing gets fun at about 2:15 with a little hop step and the singing gets particularly compelling around 2:35. It reminds me of "Can You Feel It" for some reason which is probably a synaptic misfire.

So, if you are feeling the holidays right between your shoulderblades (in the shape of the cloven hoof print, no less), watch the puppy, then put this on and shake it out.

True Things about Me

I watch too much TV.
My favorite snack is cereal with lots of milk.
I hate watching, seeing, or glimpsing someone eating milk products.
I hate seeing babies eat or drink.
I like infants but lose interest around the time they get mobile.
I do not understand or have interest in understanding children. I only ever make an effort with children who are close to me through friendship or relation…or if the child is exceptionally charming. Newsflash: Not all children are charming…or cute for that matter.
I feel as guilty as needed depending on my audience in regard to my feelings about children. Underneath the mask, I don’t feel much at all.
I really do like my job, but only when it is busy.
It bothers me when people ask when I am going to leave for another job. It reminds me of questions people ask when they have nothing better to say, like when you’re dating someone and people ask when you are getting married or when you are married and people ask when you are going to have some of those charming children.
I’ve stopped having panic attacks. Knock on wood.
My least favorite noises are abrupt, loud noises and teenagers sucking face.
My favorite show is The Amazing Race. My secret dream is to run it.
I used to have a bad temper.
I used to have a sassy attitude.
I used to have a much better sense of self worth.
I used to make fun of psychobabble terms like “self worth.”
My cover “Soft Place to Land” movies are Practical Magic and Muriel’s Wedding. My real “Soft Place” movies are Independence Day, Dawn of the Dead (2004) and in a good and perfect world, every season of Star Trek Next Generation.
Picard is obviously a superior captain to Kirk.
I don’t know that I’ve ever really been in love. Except maybe for Picard.
I have memorized all of Tim Curry’s lines from Legend.
I can sing if you’re not listening.
I still do not understand what “emo” means unless it is John Meyer who makes me hurl.
My favorite flower is the calla lily.
One of my most shameful secrets may or may not have to do with the song “Lady” by Kenny Rogers.
I’ve tried my hardest, but I’ve lied, too.

True Things about Him

He lies.
So nothing he says can ever really be true, can it?
Nice hair, though.

One Sound, All Day Long

...but better than "Kaplah!" I guess. The picture is unrelated and brilliant.

Me in the Morning

Good Morning!
